Maura Lynn Tierney is an American actress, notable for her role in the mystery drama The Affair (2014–2019), where she won a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress – Series, Miniseries or Television Film. Speaking in an interview, she explained how playing Helen Butler took its toll on her mentally, but how she’d do it all again in a heartbeat!
Maura is the eldest daughter of a prominent Boston politician, Joseph M. Tierney, and a real estate broker, Pat James. She studied at Notre Dame Academy in Massachusetts where she learned drama in one of her subjects — eventually leading her appearance at the Boston Globe Drama Festival. She then took up dance and drama at New York University but quit prior to graduation — joining the neighboring Circle-in-the-Square theater school.
In the late 1980s, Maura moved to Los Angeles to find work. She began her career in stage plays. In 1987, she got her big break when she starred in Disney’s made-for-TV film, Student Exchange. Her first starring role in a film was in a B-movie parody, Dead Women in Lingerie (1992), which was a low budget film that did little to advance her career.
Luckily, she received her regular national exposure in the sitcom, News Radio. Soon, she starred in numerous television series including Rescue Me (2009-2011), The Good Wife (2012), and The Affair (2012), the last of which won her the Golden Globe Award in 2016. She also appeared in various successful films such as Primal Fear (1996), Primary Colors (1998), Rooftop Kisses (2002), Baby Mama (2008), and Beautiful Boy (2018).
