Who Was Marty Feldman?
Marty Feldman was a British comedic actor and comedy writer. He was known for his misaligned, prominent eyes which were caused by a thyroid disease – Graves’ disease, that emerged during his childhood.
Marty grew up in a poverty-stricken East End of London and left his education when he was only 15 years old in hopes of starting a career as a jazz trumpeter. He had a variety of jobs, even being deported from Paris for vagrancy during his teenage years.
Finally, though, Marty started his comedy career in 1959 as a writer for BBC’s radio programs and other television shows. He married his wife Lauretta Feldman the same year, describing their meeting as a ‘lightning bolt’, and after nine months of dating, she proposed to him.
Feldman received two BAFTA awards for the television sketch comedy, Marty – Best Light Entertainment Performance and Best Writer.
He was laid to rest in Forest Lawn – Hollywood Hills Cemetery.
