Landis was a high-school dropout and at 18 years old, he made his way to Yugoslavia to start his career as a production assistant. It was while he was hitching from London to Yugoslavia that he came up with the idea for An American Werewolf in London. While he was in Europe, he also acted and worked as an extra and stuntman in various Spanish/Italian westerns.

In 1982, while filming his movie Twilight Zone at Indian Dunes in Valencia, Santa Clarita in California, an accident occurred on set when helicopter being used for a scene lost control. The actor Vic Morrow and 2 child actors, Renee Shin-Yi Chen and Myca Dinh Le died, six passengers were also injured. John Landis and four other members of the crew were charged with involuntary manslaughter. The prosecution argued that Landis and the crew had taken insufficient care on set and also flouted child acting laws. After a 10-month court case, they were all acquitted of the charges, however, the victim’s families all filed civil lawsuits that were settled for undisclosed sums.
