Julia Chalene Newmeyer, known as Julie Newmar, is a multi-talented star — an actress, a dancer, and a talented singer. Aside from being the main protagonist in the movie Catwoman, Julie is also an entrepreneur. She is a lingerie designer who has two U.S. patents for her brassier and pantyhose products. She is also a real estate investor in Los Angeles.
In addition to her accomplishments, she is also an award-winning theater actress, receiving a Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play for the theatrical production entitled The Marriage-Go-Round (1958).
Julie grew up in Los Angeles. Her father was a professional football player and her mother was a fashion designer. At a very young age, she started ballet dancing and joined the Los Angeles Opera when she was 15.
As a result of her background in dancing, Julie portrayed dancer roles in many of the films she starred in. Her first screen appearance was in the movie She’s Working Her Way Through College (1952). Soon, she appeared in several movies including Slaves of Babylon (1953), Evils of the Night (1985), and Ghosts Can’t Do It (1989), where she received a Razzie for Worst Supporting Actress nomination.
Soon, Julie starred in many TV shows as the villainess. She appeared in TV shows such as Route 66 (1962), My Living Doll (1964–1965), Love, American Style (1970-1972), and The Powers of Matthew Star (1981). She also became a voice artist — providing voice-overs for characters including Catwoman in the animated film, Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders (2016), and Dr. Julia Hoffman in the audio drama show, Dark Shadows: Bloodline (2019).
